Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
