Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles says farewell to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
