Scorching conditions and raging bushfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures expected to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a major alert for extreme heat has been declared across a large portion of the south-west.

Broad Heatwave Warnings Across the Region

These conditions follow recent bushfires in New South Wales, which caused the destruction of homes and loss of life. Severe heatwave warnings have additionally been issued for later this week in parts of South Australia and New South Wales, as a system of high pressure shifts to the east, bringing blazing sunshine to much of the region.

The combination of tinder-dry vegetation and unbroken heat creates a volatile scenario for emergency crews.

Global Weather Extremes Cause Chaos

Elsewhere, a metropolis was plunged into blackout last week after powerful winds damaged the city’s electrical network, with falling trees bringing down power lines. The weather conditions also caused significant transport delays at a major airport, where hundreds of flights were cancelled. Substantial damage to electrical infrastructure is expected to cause further problems as utility companies scramble to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million residents.

Unusual Mist Blankets Sunny Area

Meanwhile, a valley famed for its clear skies and abundant sunlight has experienced one of its grayest and foggiest periods on record. A specific type of low cloud, which typically lasts for only a short time, has been remarkably extensive and persistent this year, keeping temperatures at a major airport below 8C for over a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The extended haze has been fuelled by unprecedented fall precipitation that resulted in soils saturated.

Severe Weather Brings Snow to Holiday Destination

Turning to Spain, a weather system has brought heavy rain, powerful winds and even snow to a set of islands – weather many would not connect with this popular holiday destination. While wintry precipitation is not unheard of at higher ground, the system brought some of the deepest snow depths since 2016 to a protected area, forcing its temporary shutdown.

Alongside the snowfall, strong winds from the north swept across the island chain, with wind gusts reaching 50mph recorded on several islands. The influence of the storm is expected to diminish this week with more typical conditions returning.
