Ghostface Original Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a major family reunion. This new chapter marks the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a character you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that kept me up at night," Lillard reveals.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Favorites
Reports have confirmed that a trio of distinct characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though meeting their demise in prior movies. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first time since a small appearance is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he got the news from the series creator.
"I recall the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he says. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the decades since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling very nervous.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he explains. "A character that is now represented in every single Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling significant anxiety about not wanting to be the one who damages the popular series.
"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Abound
While many longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Maybe they live rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are in some way all alive in a strange shared scenario. The chance of a self-referential narrative, inspired by earlier genre films, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will find out the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
