Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood has unveiled what is being called the most significant reforms to address unauthorized immigration "in modern times".

This package, modeled on the more rigorous system implemented by Scandinavian policymakers, renders refugee status temporary, narrows the legal challenge options and includes travel sanctions on nations that refuse repatriation.

Provisional Refugee Protection

People granted asylum in the UK will only be allowed to reside in the country for limited periods, with their status reviewed every 30 months.

This implies people could be returned to their country of origin if it is considered "secure".

The scheme follows the method in the Scandinavian country, where protected persons get two-year permits and must request extensions when they terminate.

Authorities states it has begun assisting people to repatriate to Syria voluntarily, following the removal of the Syrian government.

It will now begin considering mandatory repatriation to the region and other states where people have not typically been sent back to in recent years.

Protected individuals will also need to be resident in the UK for two decades before they can apply for settled status - raised from the current five years.

Additionally, the authorities will establish a new "work and study" residence option, and urge refugees to obtain work or start studying in order to transition to this route and earn settlement more quickly.

Solely individuals on this work and study pathway will be able to petition for dependents to come to in the UK.

ECHR Reforms

Authorities also aims to eliminate the practice of allowing multiple appeals in asylum cases and introducing instead a comprehensive assessment where every argument must be raised at once.

Assistance would still be available for "those who are destitute" but will be denied from those with employment eligibility who do not, and from people who break the law or defy removal directions.
