Oscar-Nominated Star Diane Ladd, Famed For Her Performance in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at 89 Years Old.
This award-nominated actor Diane Ladd left us 89 years old.
This actor, whose credits spanned National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, left this world in her residence at her Ojai, California home. The news was shared through a message from her offspring, Oscar-winning actor Laura Dern.
Laura Dern, who appeared with her mother in various films like Wild at Heart, called her “my amazing hero plus my special gift as a mother”, writing that she was at her bedside as she died.
“She was the most wonderful grandmother, mother, daughter, actress, artist as well as compassionate soul that felt like a dream come true,” she stated. “We were fortunate to know her. Her spirit soars with angels.”
Beginnings and Breakthrough
The start of her career included minor parts in television programs such as The Fugitive while the seventies had her appearing next to the legendary Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.
During that year, the year 1974, she appeared with actress Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s acclaimed dramatic comedy the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance brought Ladd an Academy Award nomination in the supporting actress category.
Later Decades
In the 1980s, she appeared in the thriller Black Widow and comedy sequel Christmas Vacation while also joining the sitcom Alice, a comedy program derived from Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the subsequent decade, she earned an additional best supporting actress nomination for her part in Lynch’s the movie Wild at Heart where she acted as the parent of her biological child Dern’s character. The following year she obtained an additional nod for her role in Rambling Rose, another movie which also starred Laura Dern.
“This was the picture that Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she flew us to the UK for a royal premiere and an event for us,” Ladd recalled regarding Rambling Rose. “And she sat between us, grasping our hands, with tears, seeing us act.”
The 1990s featured performances in comedy Cemetery Club reuniting her with Ellen Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political comedy, featuring John Travolta and Alexander Payne’s Citizen Ruth where she acted as Dern’s mother again. Those years also earned her TV award nominations for roles on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel, a drama.
Working with Laura Dern
She kept appearing with Laura Dern in dramatic comedies the film Daddy and Them, David Lynch’s Inland Empire and White’s dark comedy series Enlightened, a TV series. She was also seen next to Sandra Bullock in the film 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian and Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.
Her later TV roles consisted of Ray Donovan plus Young Sheldon.
Writing and Directing
Ladd also wrote and directed the comedy Mrs Munck, a film featuring herself and previous spouse Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a great actor,” she mentioned. “I’m privileged to have directed him on a project. Actually, I am the sole female ever to direct her ex-husband. I often joke: ‘I tell women, if you want revenge, direct your ex-husband.’ However, I’m joking.”
Family Ties
She was additionally a family member of the great Tennessee Williams, whom she described as “a great influence in my life”.
In 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with lung disease and told her life expectancy was six months but she regained full health after her daughter transferred her to another medical facility.
