A familiar auction figure is a prominent participant at the annual bidding war.

A substantial bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the calendar year.

The winning offer for the 243kg fish was placed by the operator of a popular sushi chain, which manages restaurants domestically and abroad.

"An inaugural tuna brings a prosperous start," stated the entrepreneur, a notable figure at the annual first sale.

Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is noted for submitting record bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.

Auction Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "surprised at the final price," noting, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."

This latest acquisition exceeds his own record purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite previously remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now gone on to break his own record once again.

A Tradition of High Prices

The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally known for sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which stated the fish would be served at its eateries throughout the country.

The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a must-see event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.

From Auction to Plate

The record-priced tuna was shortly thereafter sliced up for customers at the bidder's sushi establishments soon after the auction was finished.

"I believe like I've started the year in a good way after consuming something so auspicious as the year starts," shared one elated diner.
