The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman containing multiple human souls within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct souls, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks are. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
